I didn’t set out to make a mending pledge for #MeMadeMay2026 but here we are ![]()
I’m not doing anything fancy for Me Made May this year - I’ve even sacked off the idea of daily photos from the get-go. But I do appreciate the opportunity to reflect on our handmade wardrobes.
I’ve been sewing for 6 years now, so I tend to wear my handmade clothes every day. I’ve now reached the stage in my sewing journey where some of my handmade clothes have been in my regular rotation for several years - which means they’re in desperate need of some TLC.
Scarily, of the 6 handmade garments I grabbed to wear over the past 4 days, 4 of them needed repairs!
I never would have got round to doing these (less than 5 minute) repairs if I’d chucked them on a mending pile. So without Me Made May motivation, I would have kept wearing them and risked damaging them beyond repair.
Being forced to retire a favourite garment that you lovingly handmade yourself is heartbreaking, so consider this your sign to check up on the health of your handmade wardrobe.
