Please Note: I wrote this post before the (recent) introduction of the Inspiration feature
. However… I believe the tips below could still prove to be useful for some app users
.
Sometimes, you’re just browsing a magazine, the interwebs or you see something in the shops in real life and it will remind me of patterns + fabrics that I own - and a
goes off in my head that makes me go “Wow
! ![]()
that! And, I bet I could make ![]()
![]()
that
”.
Rather than fill-up my phone picture Gallery with 1,000s of seemingly random garment screenshots (which I will promptly forget about the next day ![]()
) I now save my inspo images in an organised fashion to Patterns.
So, the short version is I like to:
Create a Pattern from my Inspo…
Then, I create a
Project = so that I can to pair the inspo + Fabric(s) together.
Sometimes it’s an article in one of the email newsletters by The Foldline that sparks inspiration for me (e.g. Trench Coat patterns), or something from the online articles of Stylist magazine (summer dresses). I’ll screenshot/download the multi-image collages that are common in those articles. Or use a image app to make my own collage to upload into StashHub (sometimes there is too many images inspiring me + not enough empty
spaces left, so collage is the solution for me
).
I’ve even been known to freeze-frame the TV
to take a
of a dress to use Google Image search to hunt
🕵🏻♀ down the designer online
.
Often, I’ll screenshot info. on the store product page about sizing, style details/description, fibre content etc. It all helps me to make decisions about my me-made project version
.
THE LONG VERSION…
I create a fresh
Pattern record for each Inspo garment.
Give the “pattern” a suitable name:
e.g.
Farm Rio Patch Denim Wide Jeans
(I usually add the
emoji to the start of the name - so if I am viewing/scrolling through ALL PATTERNS on display in the app it’ll easily catch my
)
Add in my
pictures of the inspo.
Use this (pattern) Designer name:
“
IDEA ONLY”
(NB: I include the emoji - as anything that starts with an emoji gets put at the bottom of the lists of things in the app after Z alphabetically = makes it fast for me to find
!):
Pattern Status marked as “Wishlist”
Pattern also Tagged as “
Wishlist” too for good measure
(probably a bit overkill on my part to add in the Tag).
Then within the pattern record add any more photos
of my ideas to flesh out my thoughts ![]()
![]()
![]()
For inspo that’s really got the sewjo juices flowing I’ll create a new
Project to collate multiple sources of inspiration images ![]()
together. This allows me to see several related garment images together in 1-place.
Give the “project” a suitable name:
e.g. High Rise Jeans - Vintage Style (Fitted Waist/Hips)
Status: Select “Just an Idea” as the Project status.
And, I can use the Notes field within that individual Project to
brain-dump any further ideas on tweaks, changes, thoughts
etc. that I’d like to make. (Sometimes having multiple inspo sources for a given Project makes you want to borrow ideas from one place, and different ideas from another - mix n match baby
!).
Use a * Custom Tag to mark the project with.
e.g.
Project - Trousers
+
Inspo Project
Then, afterwards I can filter my projects to find things tagged with “
Inspo Project” or anything that happens to be a Trousers type of project
.
(* NOTE: There “currently” isn’t a way in the PROJECTS section of the app to filter the view to see only one kind of “thing”: i.e. the ‘Item/Garment Type’ of a given pattern that has been added into the given project. So, for instance you cannot currently ask the app to only show all of your “Skirt” projects, or only “Dresses”. See my older Topic here
How I use Tags to Filter my PROJECTS
