Winding thread to spools?

Does anyone have any experience of winding thread on to spools rather than bobbins (for use with my overlocker). I can’t see any that have a hole in the top for the thread (like a bobbin) to allow you to use a machine. Any advice?

@viviennerogers I’ve a vintage sewing machine - with a bobbin Winder at the top right (close to the handwheel).

I’ve hot-glued bobbins to the bottom of empty Gutermann thread spools - then popped my new hacked-contraption onto the bobbin winder. I’ve then used a large Overlocker (Serger) thread cone on a stand to fill up the empty spool :thread::+1:t3:.

I usually buy x1 cone of thread colour and use it to fill up 3x empty :thread::thread::thread:spools to use on my Overlocker or my Coverstitch machines. Saves me :pound::moneybag: + storage space too :joy:

@ClaireSews idea to glue the spools to bobbins is a great idea. Most thread spools have a gap around the bottom which you can use to catch the starting thread (instead of putting it through the hole on the bobbin). Let us know how you get on!

Yes! I use it during winding to stop it unravelling at the start + of course to tidy the thread up after I’ve finished using the spool on my Overlocker too .

I’ve been doing this for yeeeaaarss :joy:.
Every time I finish a spool I keep it and hot-glue bobbins to the bottom of saved spools on batches. Then, I always have 3x ready to fill up from a big overlocker thread cone when I need them :+1:t3:.

@viviennerogers I’d be interested to see if you ever fancy trying this out

Definitely will - just need some empty spools. Thanks

@BlossomSandwich I’ll need to check my basket first :joy:… I might have a bunch already awaiting the :fire::gun: :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Very clever. Thank you, I’m now going to do as you do, less expense and less storage and the ability to afford more of the colours that’s I’d like. :rose:

@Sewlovemydogs let us know how you get on :+1:t3:.

Plus, it’s a great way to repurpose empty spools :thread: :recycle: too!

I had just done a big spool clear out before I thought of winding on extra thread for the overlocker. So stupid!:woman_shrugging:

@viviennerogers oh no :scream:… Can you grab them out of the :put_litter_in_its_place::wastebasket: and wash them maybe?

Alas no. They’re gone now.

Omg, sorry to jump in on the action but is there any way you could send me some empty spools? This idea is genius!
