I have this kind of pot, not inherited from my grandma and even from my mother. It’s mine
Within there are unpicked buttons from garnments that can’t be saved and spare buttons. So, there are a lot of “orphan buttons”. I always think that I will sort them by colors but never take the time to do it ![]()
I use a similar box, but a larger size. Each compartment contains a different color button. The compartments can be different sizes based on moving the little dividers around. I think it is an old JoAnn’s purchase years ago.
Vernier callipers - genius - so fed up trying to measure my buttons with a tape measure. Off to find some of them
@Foxy126 I got mine on eBay
. I bought 3-4x and left one in my sewing room + each of my different handbags so is ALWAYS have one on me haha ![]()

hiii i’m new here and this is my first comment – but button storage seems tricky and under-discussed so i was excited to see all yalls ideas! mine are all in a couple jars, mixed up (inherited/secondhand by the scoop from Swansons). first i mixed by warm colors, cool colors, whites (and white-adjacent) and blacks (and black-adjacent). but the first time i looked for buttons after that, i realized i always look by size - not color. so now i think i have one jar for smaller and one for larger, and i specified a cutoff though the measurement for the cutoff is lost in the mists of time.
Ahh mixed button jars are a nightmare! Having enough matching buttons is one of the deciding factors for me when picking which buttons to use so I’ve got to keep them with their friends. I’d love to try one of those soil/gravel sorting columns to see whether you could use it to separate mixed buttons by size ![]()
Oh my gosh I love that idea – I’m picturing the Sesame Street coin sorting machine I had as a child, but for buttons. I do want to put all the buttons with their friends! I’m still deciding between putting them on a card together, or a little zippy bag (I have a ton in my “useful things” bin), or simply run a thread through the buttons that are a friend group. I’m delighted we’re talking about this!! I’m sorry my button jars might give you nightmares ![]()
@BlossomSandwich i had a brainwave last night thinking about this!!! you know how a person maybe has a bin of fabric scraps less than 1" wide that Might Be Useful??? a person could sew the buttons onto those scraps! one set of buttons per strip! (also i JUST realized that you are the person i was talking to at the check your thread meetup on sunday! i am so completely recruited to Stash Hub, this is an excellent tool!!!)
Another brilliant idea with the callipers, thank you @ClaireSews! ![]()

Love this method. Avoid spilling buttons everywhere. Can organize by color. See what buttons will work for your project at a glance.
Doesn’t everyone have one in their sewing space?
What an amazing idea! I’ve always kept mine in jars but in an effort to get more compact with my storage, I think this is perfect.
