My gingham shirt

This is my second Amy shirt. I had problems with this and it got left on my sewing table for ages. Finally finished it today. It’s navy although looks black in picture.

First problem - when trying to sew the placket down it just didn’t want to know. I pressed it flat nicely but when sewing it kept moving so it ended up twisted. I didn’t understand why. After unpicking it several times I gave up and hand stitched it.

Second problem - the collar and stand pieces didn’t fit and I hax to shorten the pattern pieces by half an inch on the fold line to make it fit. J don’t understand this either because it would have been made by lots of other people before me and I haven’t heard anyone else have this trouble.

I made size 8 and it is a good fit although I should have done a narrow shoulder adjustment. I think it would make a good shirt dress as it is shaped nice and the lines could just be extended downwards. I think I’ve had enough of shirts for now though and don’t know when I will revisit this pattern.

Yep, definitely sounds like time to take a break from shirt making for a bit! Well done for coming back to finish this project. I don’t know why, but some projects just don’t want to play nice :upside_down_face:

Well done for persevering! It looks great .

May I humbly suggest looking at Wonder Tape? It’s a temporary, sticky 6mm wide water-soluble tape that is great for holding things in place for tricky areas of sewing. I use it on zipper tapes, things that annoy me (so I don’t have to spend ages hand basting, :sewing_needle::thread:before using my sewing machine).

Oh I didn’t think of that. I’ve got some. I used it to stick my buttons on before machine sewing them on and hold the collar stand in place.

Wonder tape is fantastic. I wouldn’t be able to put in a zip without it  I’ve also used some basting glue - got the idea from KaTM with their label glue but the normal (cheap) basting glue/ pritt stick is great. It washes out.
