I’d like to start adding labels to the things I sew, especially the things I sell. something cute and simple, that says “handmade” or something similar. Any recommendations for where to buy them? Ideally somewhere U.S. based to keep the shipping costs lower.
I ordered my from local supplier here in Ireland however I know that Alisa from Thoughtful Creativity (she is in USA) orders from Wunderlab. She has a video on her channel with a discount code. They are great quality (i was gifted some and they were fab)
I only sew for myself and those I love, but my parents taught me as a small child that if you make something, you should be proud enough to sign your name to it. So I started using custom clothing labels five years ago, and I get a warm, fuzzy feeling every time I see them inside a garment.
I order my custom, woven labels from Dutch Label Shop. Despite the name, they’re US-based, and they do quality work with a really reasonable turn-around time. Best of all, the labels are soft and smooth, so those I sew for who have sensory issues have zero problem with them.
I’ve had several different versions of labels made:
My last name is Key, so I designed this mark a number of years ago as a watermark for my photography. It was a natural fit for my sewing work, too.
My grandkids call me Amma, and I put this in the clothing I make for them. It’s actually a folded design, so you see the top part on the front and the bottom part on the back.
And I had these made for items I sew for people other than my grands, like my Mom and my stepdaughter and my nieces. It, too, is a folded design.
Dutch Label Shop has very low minimum order requirements, but I ordered these in batches of 50 because the price decreases as your quantity goes up.
Hope this helps!
Spoonflower.com is great if you want to design and print your own labels. I use Affinity Designer to produce the digital file and then upload it to Spoonflower. You can get around 40 labels printed on a Fat Quarter for about $12, and then they need cutting, hemming and folding. That may sound like a lot of overhead (!), but the results are definitely worthwhile when you are adding your own labels to your makes. Here is a set of labels I made for my niece - a knitter studying physics at uni, hence the name AstroSparrow Knits!
@Alison, what a cool idea to have them custom-printed on fabric! It looks like a big cost savings over having custom woven ones made. What kind of fabric do you have them printed on?
I use a stamp that I had custom made with my name on it. I ordered it through Paper Sushi, a US based stamp company.
I also use Dutch Label shop for my custom labels!
For those who have not purchased from them before, hey have great sales about twice a year - watch for that!
Dutch Label has custom clothing labels that make your work stand out! Just reading it from the website! Hahaha. I hope this helps!
Those labels are adorable! I didn’t know spoonflower did that.
I use Organic Cotton Sateen for the labels, but I think it would also work with a slightly heavier fabric. You can also print different label designs on the same fat quarter, so it is pretty versatile.
Dutch label shop is great if you want personalised but my favourite is always Kylie and the machine labels. You can buy from her online shop or lots of fabric and haberdashery stores sell them.
My US friend gets nice labels from this Etsy shop - https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/HatchGoodsStudio
I’m a big fan of Intensely Distracted sewing labels, based in the US. Lots of fun designs, and many are 100% cotton woven labels. These are my favorites to avoid the scratchy label problem.
I bought a roll of ribbon online that says Handmade, then a gap, and repeated. I cut 1 repeat off and add it to a seam
If you know someone with a sublimation printer get them to apply them onto some polyester fabric. Very easy to do! Have to cut but cheap and cheery.
