Help required with an old sewing machine

I haven’t sewed much this year as very sadly it has been a truly awful start to the year, with my Mum passing at the end of January. I’m looking for some help on using her old sewing machine. When we were little she sewed a lot but then stopped (I don’t know why, so many things I wish I’d asked now) & I haven’t seen this machine used in about 35 years. Found it at the back of a cupboard & thought I could get it serviced & back in action, thinking it’ll be good for bags & heavy duty stuff.
I found a youtube video to thread it & it does still work, actually stitching very well after all these years. I really need the manual as I have no idea how to use it but there’s no note of the model number, any ideas? Or does anyone have one & can enlighten me on what all the levers & knobs do.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your mum and hope you can find some comfort in getting her old sewing machine up and running.

I did a google image search and it suggests that it could be a Singer Merrit, and the model number might be located in a couple of different places.

Once you’re able to narrow it down, hopefully it’ll be easier to find either the exact manual or one from a compatible model. Good luck :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s lovely that you want to get your mom’s machine going again.

I hope I am not stating the obvious, but you asked about the different levers. I used to teach sewing, so I saw a lot of different machines. Looking from top to bottom, the wheel on top left is the presser foot pressure. The bobbin winder is on the top right.

On the main panel, the leftmost levers are “type of stitch” on the far left - straight stitch and then narrow to wide zig-zag. The middle lever is needle position, looks like center, left or right. The far right lever allows you to have the feed dogs (that move fabric through the machine) up or down. Feed dogs are usually up, but for darning, you have to drop them down.

The round knob that the thread is going through is the thread tension. The lever on the right with the slot is your stitch length. You unscrew the lever, move to the stitch length position you want and tighten it up again where you want the length. I am guessing that this works the same way as a Singer featherweight, if you want to reverse, you hold the lever up.

I would make sure to flip that latch at the bottom which should allow the machine to swing up inside the case - looks like there are hinges on the back. You may find a lot of lint in there, but maybe the model number is underneath on a tag?

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much, just knowing the levers is enough for me to use it. I’m going to get it serviced & then have a proper go. Actually v little lint underneath, Mum was obviously better than me at cleaning her machine.

Thanksso much. I’ve had a good look but really can’t see it. Think I’ll be ok though as a few people have explained the levers, now I know what they do I can use it, just need to get it serviced first.
