hiii Ankara Week is coming and there’s a challenge associated – I’d love to chat more about the fabric and how to use it. Specifically, I’m a white person with no African heritage and I’ve come into a few lengths of African wax print, and so far I’ve decided to use it to make gifts for friends/family/my significant other who are of African heritage/extraction. This week/challenge seem like a good opportunity to talk some of that out if others are interested!

This is a really helpful Q&A video about Ankara fabric from Juliet (who is one of the hosts of Ankara Appreciation Week). She does recommend hand washing but I’ve washed mine in the machine at 30 loads and it’s been fine.
Here are a couple of garments I’ve made with Ankara fabric:
Helen’s Closet Ashton Top - This is one of the first things I made when I started sewing!
Pattern Fantastique - Vali Dress
African Wax Print has a lot of structure so it’s really good for creating volume - e.g. puff sleeves!
