Hi, I’m Katie. I live in the southwest of France - Pau to be precise but not many people outside of France have heard of it.
I mostly sew for my 2 kids and me. My partner also occasionally gets something too. I make most of our clothes. I don’t buy for myself at all.
I have so many organisation struggles. My fabric is mostly organised but it’s the staying organised that is complicated. My threads are ok but all the other extra bits, like elastic, zippers… no organisation.
My biggest organisation dream is to not.waste time looking for things, the scissors that have disappeared again, the pins that always end up all over the floor…
But basically mostly looking to see all the great tips so that I can use them when I finally get my sewing room!
Sounds like you’ve created an organising system but perhaps not the one that works best for you. Hopefully you’ll pick up lots of tips in Sew Sorted soon!
For stuff like scissors and tools, it’s really helpful to keep them near where they’ll be used. I made a mat for my sewing machine to sit on with pockets on the front - so great for keeping everything handy.
I use plastic storage with a lid for things like buttons, zippers, bias tape,etc. They are about 12” x 9” x 2.5” tall. That way, I can stack them with labels facing out. For elastic, I use sturdy cardboard and wrap the elastic around it and store it standing on a shelf like in the fabric stores here in Canada. I typically buy at least 10m at a time. I use a large round mesh basket that holds my scissors, rotary cutters, pens and markers. For smaller items like needles and bobbins, I use desk organizers in a drawer. It is so nice to have an organized work space. I also re-organize as necessary after a couple of projects.
