I used two Kallax units to make a cutting table in my sewing room - just added some glides on the bottom so I could move it (would have used castors but I’m short!) and a large board on top as my surface for my mat. Works really well for me!
This looks beautifully organised ![]()
Thank you! I am super happy that I can see my fabric without having to open the bin!
Lots of people on Insta said they have a Kallax cutting table, so you’re definitely onto something here!
I use bins and Kallax. My issue with Kallax is I don’t like seeing everything. I guess I need more storage cubes to go in my Kallax.
Yes more cubes, or you could fashion a kind of curtain to cover the front of your Kallax ![]()
@Handmadelegacy I have several Kallax shelving units in my sewing room. The previous model (Expedit - had the same size cubby holes) IKEA used to make large single drawer units to insert. They still make the 2-drawer inserts.
I bought 4x of the old big drawers from IKEA direct, but over the years I’ve stalked eBay to buy more second hand
. I find them perfect for storing my (vast
) pattern stash as well as other supplies ![]()
.
I just “wish” IKEA would bring them back (sigh
). I tried Tweeting @ them back in 2016 but no joy
…
@BlossomSandwich I’ve always hankered after one of those Kallax Craft tables.
I like the idea of being able to walk around the perimeter to cut
out stuff.
Handyman Kallax Table Hack
But, my tiny spare bedroom (which has been my sewing room for years) won’t fit one sadly. (It’d have to be against the chimney breast
.)
Not a Kallax in sight. Fabric etc in the large wardrobe patterns and books on the wall cupboards and machines on the worktop.
@Foxy126 lovely clean lines to that set up
+ bonus is the extra protection from dust / sun damage fading fabric colours too… Nice
!
I use large stackable opaque crates as sometimes I need to store in the conservatory and opaque crates mean no sun fading. Crates also keep out the spiders! Now I have the app it really doesn’t matter that I can’t see the contents, I just number the boxes then can immediately find via your app.
My fabric stash is stored in plastic crates, but when I get the time to remodel my “craft room” well its the teeny tiny can’t swing a cat room, then I will be purchasing the 2 x 4 Kallax unit which will sit neatly behind the door
I like this idea
That is wonderful! What a beautiful piece of furniture
Same Here! I use bins but fold my fabric on to comic cards then store. I have a hanging rod I hang wovens from. I use the Kallax cabinets for all of my other sewing supplies. Your organization looks spectacular!
I have an antique library table that I lifted with bed risers to make it a good height for cutting. Under that is something similar to Kallax, only horizontal. I use a bedspread to cover the whole thing, because it’s also a rehearsal space. I like it because I don’t have to look at the chaos (and my fellow singers were getting distracted by the fabric). But it is kind of a pain to find things.
“whatever shelves i already have” is definitely better to me! i used to have a kallax, many homes ago, and they were not the right size for most things i wanted to put in them. so i had to buy more things from ikea to work with the shelves. that seemed…unnecessary! also drawers are the best to me, for the combination of accessibility and completely-put-awayness.
yay this is a good poll.
wow i love the visibility of this – the mesh baskets on the bottom, the vertical folded ones that are so colorful you want to sew them up right now..
Brace yourself for hearing a lot about vertically folding fabrics during Sew Sorted ![]()
VERY BRACED AND READY
(yes robots that is a complete sentence and a complete thought!)
